Prior to this time, Lacie was making plans to celebrate with all the

HOPE Mentors - Helping Others Progress Effectively.

This is a program that is run by inmate volunteers to help inmates that are new and arriving at

Denver Women's Correctional Facility.

HOPE provides mentors to help these ladies adapt and

adjust to "life on the inside" and it is a REAL NEED!!!

The NEED is being met with HOPE!! !

Lacie has worked VERY hard to keep HOPE going for many years!!! In the beginning of September, she began telling me about her plans to have a Christmas Party with all 22 mentors. It was her desire to have a meal together, take pictures, play a game, and possibly provide a gift for each woman who volunteers as a way of saying "thank you!" and to acknowledge all their commitment to help others. As you can imagine, it is a valuable program.

It is not easy to accomplish having gatherings like this “inside” and yet, through

NUMEROUS attempts, being told no, restructuring the plans to make them work, and working with officers for over three months,

LACIE DID IT!!!

On December 2nd, Lacie was able to see all of her hard work and coordination come together by having a meal brought in “from the outside” by the Chaplain of New Beginnings (the church that is run inside DWCF), provide a 2024 planner for each girl, and GET PICTURES taken. Getting group photos like this one require permission. THIS is a BIG DEAL!!!

It is support “from the outside” that helps encourage Lacie and keep her focused on managing, maintaining, and maneuvering through all the obstacles she has faced since being falsely accused, wrongfully convicted, and sentenced to three life terms that she began serving on April 1, 2009.

ANOTHER AMAZING MIRACLE

took place the day I flew to Denver on

Wednesday, October 25th.

Ken was scheduled to arrive the next day. As I landed that late Wednesday morning, picked up my rental car, and headed to the hotel to check-in, I heard the Holy Spirit whisper an idea that sounded like it could have been my own.

“Go by the Law School and drop off a note to Justin.”

You may recall hearing Sturm College of Law Professor Justin Marceau's experience and how he came to know about Lacie’s case in her Clemency Video.

When I met Justin for the first time in early June 2023, he had mentioned he wanted to continue trying to get Lacie’s story in front of Colorado Governor Jared Polis.

Getting in front of the Governor of Colorado in order to tell Lacie's story was something Justin - the law professor, Gail Johnson - Lacie's attorney, and Anne Marie Moyes - Executive Director of Korey Wise Innocence Project had been working on even before Lacie's Clemency was filed on October 3, 2022. The three of them had a meeting with the Governor's legal team in December 2022.

We were VERY hopeful that something would happen.

In the first week of February 2023, Justin wrote about Lacie in a book review for the Harvard Civil Rights - Civil Liberties Law Review and the book:

To this day, we are not certain that Governor Polis had even seen or heard Lacie's actual plea for clemency before it was denied. Nothing has truly been heard regarding Lacie's legal pursuits since late June 2023 when Anne Marie Moyes with Korey Wise Innocence Project agreed to join Gail Johnson in her pursuit to see Lacie declared innocent and released. Since then, it has been crickets.

It can be disheartening as we wait, so, when I heard the Lord tell me to

"go to the law school to leave a note for Justin. . ."

it was something I was willing to do.

It was also definitely something I wanted to do.

I left the hotel at 2 pm and made the 25 minute drive to the law school and experienced numeorous little miracles as I found a parking spot, was given access to a back entrance of the building, escorted to his office, and stood in at a cubicle outside of Justin's office and began writing him a note on the items we had made out of Lacie's artwork. I thought it was a nice touch to have Lacie's own Season of Blooming artwork in hand. I had not expected Justin to be there, yet, when I arrived, his office door was open and I could hear others talking in his office.

A few moments later, Justin stepped out of his office and into the doorway. He saw me. I wanted to make sure I didn’t interrupt what he was doing and I wanted to be respectful of his time since I had not called ahead.

He stepped out of his office and I sensed he was in disbelief that I was there in front of him.

Believe me, I was feeling the same way!

As he came toward me, two men followed him out of his office.

Justin paused and said to the man standing next to him,

“Well, this is unusual. Remember the clemency video I sent to you this morning about

Lacie Nelson?”

“Yes, I haven’t had a chance to see it yet,” the man replied.

“Well," Justin responded, "this is her sister.”

And with that unplanned introduction, not knowing who the man was, I stepped forward, put my hand out and introduced myself,

“Hi, I am Stephanie Mays.”

And in that moment, I experienced another miracle!!

I was shaking the hand of Marlon Reis,

the husband to Colorado Governor Jared Polis!!!

Justin had sent Lacie’s Clemency Video to Marlon Reis THAT MORNING!!!!!

Talk about timing!!!

Talk about God setting me up for a PERFECT introduction!!!

It was AMAZING and all of it happened because Ken and I were willing to prayerfully do what Lacie had asked us to do almost two years earlier - adopt Jana bring her into the family!!!

I am still in awe of how the Lord moved that week!!!

SO MANY MIRACLES!!

SO MANY!!!

Another miracle is in the making as I type this brief update. As you know, I was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2020. It is truly hard to believe that I am approaching the four year anniversary!!! WOW!!!

On October 2nd, I woke up to a dream that outlined many unusual encounters and experiences. At the time, I had begun praying and asking the Lord to speak to me in dreams and this is the one I wrote down all the details.

On this particular morning, after writing it all down, I asked the Lord,

“What are you telling me?”

His answers were very clear to me, schedule your revision surgery, the surgeon will be able to get you in before the end of the year. So, I called that morning and scheduled my appointment for November 9th. I would be seeing the surgeon, Aldona Spiegel. She had performed the DIEP Flap Double Mastectomy on March 1, 2022.

On the morning of the appointment, I heard the Lord whisper to me again, “This is a setup.”

I grew a little concerned and when I inquired more. He responded to me saying, “It is setup like the Wednesday you arrived in Denver. I am doing it again.”

I wasn’t quite sure what to think of it all, but I did know that His ways and plans are higher than mine!! I drove to the appointment with a confidence and anticipation of Him doing something amazing. Again.

Sure enough, through a series of wonderful conversations and encounters, an opening became available as I was getting dressed to leave the office and I was offered a date for surgery of December 18th!! It all happened before I left the office!

Early Christmas present for me!!!

It is truly a miracle because surgeries were not being scheduled until February and March of 2024.

Many more miracles have happened since that day as I prepared for the surgery by getting all the required clearances. As well, I have had NUMEROUS opportunities to pray for people as I walked in faith to see what God desired to do - and He did some truly remarkable things for myself and others along the way. He continues to do so!!!

In closing, I would like to ask you,

IS THIS A SEASON OF MIRACLES for you and your family?

The most important MIRACLE is waiting for us to trust, receive, and believe in Him.

The one whose birth we are celebrating on December 25th.

Do you know Him?

He knows you. Your soul even knows Him!

He even planned you before you were conceived in your mother’s womb!

There is nothing better than knowing the One who created me, saved me, and comforts me - the Trinity of my Father in Heaven, His Son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

God IS REAL!!!

You can BELIEVE!!!

He is FOR you!

There is a great reminder in Romans 10:10-13

10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.”

12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him.

13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

Ken, Lacie, Jana, and I are seeing HIS purposes fulfilled in our life!

We are truly overwhelmed by His love and provision for us each day.

I, personally, am even more amazed at how my sister - the one I never knew growing up and reunited with in 2019, made me a mother for the first tim e!!!

May His MIRACLE for YOU arrive THIS Christmas as you recognize the Birth of His Son!!!

SURGERY UPDATE: On the morning of December 18th, surgery had to be postponed due to an unexpected allergic reaction I was having. My surgeon did not want to take any chances and I felt peace with that decision as well.

Remember, the Lord had given me a dream and it was amazing that I had been scheduled for surgery before the end of the year so I knew I was not there by accident. It had to be for something.

As the surgeon was leaving the preop room with the decision made to cancel the surgery,

I began asking the Lord, "Why am I here?"

As I was praying I quickly saw in BIG BOLD letters the name JESUS right where the preop nurse had been standing hours earlier. There was a realization and understanding that I needed to ask the nurse and ask if he knew Jesus.

Well, I did ask him, the moment he came back. He immediately responded, "Yes."

I pressed in and asked how we could pray for him. Ken and I had a truly remarkable time of prayer, encouraging him, and THEN he prayed for me!!!

Upon our departure, the woman who had checked me in hours earlier came up to talk to us. We had shared our faith and confidence in the Lord earlier and she, in some ways, continued where we left off before we prayed for her and the challenges she had presented to Ken and I.

Indeed, it was a special time with the Lord and all things turned out for good!

He uses all things, even postponed surgery!!!

I had the revision surgery on January 8th and have been recovering since then.

Who Is At Your Table?

Preparing For A Celebration

I woke up to a vision of a long wooden table being prepared for a celebratory meal. It was in the process of being set, and there was a buzz of people gathering to participate in the occasion. As I took a glimpse of who was there, I realized no one was identified as anyone I knew.

This is when the Lord spoke to me and asked,

“Who do you want to have seated at your table?”

"What? I get to choose?"

It was a concept I had never truly experienced. I was and have often been a guest in other people’s homes. Whether it was a casual dinner or a holiday gathering, I have grown accustomed to being part of other people’s family events.

Now, in this vision, I was faced with the reality that I get to invite and offer a seat to guests that I want to have seated at this long, bare wooden table, a table being prepared for a celebration.

The first thought of a guest we would all long to have would be Jesus. He would most certainly be welcome to be with us! What a treasure it would be to have Jesus there to represent Our Father and Holy Spirit. A meal that is complete with the Trinity - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Another thought and desire of mine flashed before me. It was a heart’s desire. A desire that I had been longing for my entire life:

A table surrounded by family - siblings.

My family. My siblings.

What would be better?

"But, Lord, how and when is this table going to be set, prepared, and ready for a gathering?”

I thought of Thanksgiving and the joy of having Lacie with us - Wayne and Margaret (my oldest brother and his wife - we met for the first time in November 2019 and had a fabulous Thanksgiving WITH macaroni and cheese in November 2021), a few cousins and my mom. Yet, I know there are more. More that will want to celebrate seeing our family come together for the first time WITH Lacie!!!

IT WILL BE A CELEBRATION.

ONE THAT WILL NOT BE TAKEN FOR GRANTED OR NEGLECTED.

I have not had much that I have felt like celebrating in the last few years. Surgeries for breast cancer were the focus of November 2020, 2021, and another had been planned for November 2022, yet there is something unique about what God is preparing for this next season.

Where will we be?

Who will be with us?

And when, Lord, when will this great gathering take place?

I can see that you are doing something new that has never been done before and I want to be ready.

Ready to welcome you, Jesus, to the table.

The table of reconciliation and reunion.

There will be no “kid’s table” off to the side. We will all be kids at your table for the first time!!!

Talk about the anticipation and longing I have had to have siblings in my life. . .

And what will it feel like to be surrounded by all of the siblings and their family?

To be together. . . for the first time. . .

and . . .

What will this feel like with Jesus at the head of the table?

Hope. Assurance. Confidence.

One thing is for sure: it will not happen without Jesus.

And finding siblings has most certainly not happened without Him being a part of it!

What are you preparing for?

Who would you like to have at your table?

Has jealousy, anger, resentment, or unforgiveness kept you from being able to invite your family to a celebratory meal?

What would it take to make things right?

What would it take to change this?

It has taken me 56 years, and I am still working on it.

Now, I have a vision that assures me it can happen, and I don’t want anything to stand in the way.

Let’s prepare for our celebratory meal.

*Note: I grew up as an only child with a single mom who sometimes worked three jobs to pay the bills and keep us going. When I was 24, I discovered I was one of five siblings through my father. All of us have a different mom. I am the third born/middle of five with two older brothers - Wayne, the oldest; Thomas, the second oldest I have not seen since the mid-90s; Lacie,13 years younger than me - we saw her last week and celebrated her 43rd birthday; and the youngest, a brother, was found in March 2020.

Now that we have all been accounted for, when will we all get together for this celebratory meal?

I cannot even imagine what a celebration like this even looks like!

Stephanie and Lacie, after taking a plane ride over Houston with our newly discovered cousin, Trey, a flight instructor, in November 1992.

Many of you have walked with the two of us since I began sending urgent prayer requests in April 2020. Big things were happening in all of our lives then and still are today. At the beginning of the pandemic, you may recall , Lacie and I were hit hard on April 15, 2020. That day, I learned a suspicious tumor was discovered that would later be diagnosed as breast cancer. Additionally, Lacie began coughing up blood from an undiagnosed infection requiring two lobes of her right lung to be removed a year later.

Yes, on the same day in April 2020,

Lacie and I began a new fight for our lives, our health, and our future.

Lacie and I joined our faith in an entirely new way three years ago. We did it because we needed answers. We needed help. Since then, Lacie and I have experienced numerous encounters with the Lord. We have been reminded often of His goodness, and we are here to testify -

GOD IS A GOOD GOD!

I was reading the first chapter of Luke in the Bible. It reminded me of another person who also had some very significant faith-building experiences , Zechariah. In it, we are told about Gabriel, an angel who made himself known to Zechariah.

During his experience, Zechariah was told of very specific details surrounding a son he and his wife, Elizabeth, would have. This was an outlandish thing for Zechariah to believe since he and his wife were so old or, as the ESV translation says, “advanced in years.” As I continued reading about Zechariah, I was reminded of the specific things God had shown me and the promises He made when I encountered the Lord at 19 years of age.

It was the time in my life when I came to Christ and was born again. The impact that Christ had on my life was beyond life-changing. It was radical. I was healed instantly of a physical ailment and delivered from drugs and alcohol on the spot.

It all happened in an instant.

From that day on, a Sunday in late November 1986, I would never be the same. I can imagine, it is much like the account of Zechariah told in Luke Chapter 1, with details and directions of what to expect. In all of it, Zechariah's life would never be the same either!

Soon after having my own personal encounter with the Father, the Lord, the God of all, and Our Creator, I began to hunger for His Word - the Bible - and all things Him.

On January 4, 1987 , I took another step of faith and, with great desire, was baptized in water. That same night, I received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with evidence of speaking in tongues .*

*Note: Don't let anyone try to convince you that this doesn't happen anymore. The same Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - Trinity - that I encountered in late 1986/early 1987 is the same as the one talked about in Luke 1 and Acts 2. Yes, He is the same today!

So, did I mention my life would never be the same?

It was evident to many who knew me. It was an exciting time , so much so that I would often go back to the dark little bar I had often sought refuge in to tell others about Jesus. I wasn't even of age to drink, yet, before my encounter with Jesus, I had spent many nights there attempting to escape the pain and destruction of my childhood experiences and abuse.

I'll never forget the woman who managed the bar. One night, while telling someone about my born-again encounter and how Jesus had rescued me, the woman approached me from behind the bar, leaned over, and quietly told me, "You have to stop telling people about Jesus. It is bad for my business."

I knew I was doing the right thing.

Around that time, I remember finding a scripture. It was the last scripture in the Old Testament.

Malachi 4:6 (ESV) And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children, and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.

What fascinated me about scripture was how I had become aware that God's word, the Bible, was full of wisdom, direction, and confirmations. This scripture also helped me acknowledge one thing that was missing from my life, and it was a BIG thing.

My Father.

I had never known him, although I remembered him. My mother and I fled the State of Texas in fear for our lives when I was two years old. Now, at 19, in the season following my life-changing encounter with Christ, I would read Malachi 4:6, and it would hit me deep to the core.

God was going to unite me with my father one day. I was sure of that because it was His plan to do so. I knew it. I could feel it. It was in black and white on the pages of my Bible. It was a promise I held on to and believed in at 19. I will never forget the moment I read it and how I felt a sense of confidence in my new relationship with God, my Father. I was beginning to trust and realize that He could do all things and would.

But really? Unite me with my father? How? When?

It was a promise. A promise He would keep, and I didn’t even know where my father was!

I am sure those are the same questions Zechariah had after encountering an angel, as told in Luke 1. Here he was, an old man with a wife that was "advanced in years," being instructed about a son they would have. Can you hear Zechariah questioning God too? How? When?

In the following years, I never doubted that God's promise and plan to "turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers" would happen.

In June 1991, I found my father and my father found me!

In the months following this, I learned I was no longer an only child!

Nope.

I was one of five children from my father. It was another life-changing event for me.

This event led me to find Lacie.

We spoke for the first time on Sunday, March 22, 1992. I was 24, and Lacie was 11 years old.

One week after talking to Lacie for the first time, Stephanie had an unexpected first-time-ever visit from her father, Michael, on March 29, 1992.

He had traveled from Anchorage, Alaska where he was a deep-sea fisherman. It was a big step in seeing God's promises being kept!

Stephanie and Lacie originally met on August 1, 1992, in Colorado for the first time.

God's Promises Being Kept - It was changing all of our lives !!!

I can only imagine that God's promises, as spoken by an angel, being fulfilled in Zechariah's life were life-changing too! His prophetic experience was so important it is documented in God's Word with promises of who his son would become and what he would do in his life even before he was born.

This is true for all of us. God has a plan for us before we are conceived in our mother's womb.

After 17 years of separation, I reunited with Lacie in July 2019. I am often reminded of how our story goes back to 1991. Yes, our story began over 30 years ago. What God had planned for us and my other siblings that are now accounted for continues to be revealed even to this day.

This is why I stand for Lacie. This is why I don't give up. This is why I keep pursuing the truth and reality of what God put in my heart at the age of 19.

I'll be turning 56 in a few weeks. A lot of time has passed since those encounters at the age of 19, yet, it feels like time has stood still.

I am embracing this challenge because in these 32 years since meeting my little sister, Lacie,

I have also seen many promises of God fulfilled.

I can look back and see His hand in many encounters, and THAT is what keeps me going.

It is a pursuit of wanting His plan fulfilled in my life.

Walking with Lacie for the last few years has brought value and a purpose to my life that I have always desired and never known. He is indeed making a way and has done much to "turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers."

Our story, Lacie's and mine is about redemption and healing. It is a story of finding fathers and being restored. It is one of blessings and promises being fulfilled because the last part of Malachi 4:6, "utter destruction," is not an option for us.

Tale of Two Sisters is about witnessing God's promises and living them out until completion, just like Zechariah did. I am so glad to have each one of you join us on this journey.

It has been an adventure!

New Year New Hope - January 18, 2023

As many of you may recall, I expected Lacie would be released from prison by now ! I expected that to happen on 12/22/22, however, on that day, the Governor of Colorado offered clemency and commutations to 24 other people. The good news is Governor Polis’ legal counsel has heard of Lacie’s case of innocence along with three others.

We are so close to Governor Polis personally hearing the truth about Lacie’s story!!!

SO CLOSE!!!

Gail, Lacie’s attorney, has been very busy and we value prayers for her as well!

Many other things have happened for Lacie since the last Tale of Two Sisters was sent out on November 30, 2022. Here are some of the connections and meetings that occurred in the last month:

December 1st, 2nd, and 3rd of 2022 - Lacie and I were able to spend some much needed quality time together . Oh, how we long for our visits to not be restricted by time and prison walls. A couple of friends were able to join us as well. It was a tremendous blessing for all of us.
I had hoped to meet with the Governor the first or second week of December, however, that did not happen. Instead, 12/15/2022 Gail, Lacie’s attorney and a law professor from Denver University met with the Governor of Colorado’s legal counsel to discuss four cases of innocence, including Lacie’s.
Multiple meetings in December with a newly elected Colorado Legislator, Elisabeth Epps were held to discuss commutations, clemency, and cases of innocence.

The amount of efforts being made on behalf of Lacie by numerous legal professionals and officials has brought all of us a tremendous amount of hope in this new year .

All these efforts have kept us in prayer - on our knees and on our toes too!!!

Without your prayers, I honestly do not know how everyone could have managed or maintained this level of intensity in the recent months. It has been a lot, to say the least.

Lacie’s ordeal in seeking truth and justice hits very close to home for me . For those of you that don’t know, I, as a young girl/woman, was the victim sexual assaults by being drugged, raped, and molested. These multiple assaults took place in my home, at a church event, and at a doctor’s office. Yes, these events happened in places where most of us would expect to be kept safe.

Memories of those events have haunted and plagued me with despair at different times of my life. In ways, it felt like I was bleeding on the inside from wounds and scars that were not seen from the outside. I had indeed been a victim of sexual crimes, yet, none of the men who committed these crimes were ever brought to justice or held accountable.

When I was faced with the reality that someone had falsely accused Lacie of sexual crimes, I was deeply traumatized. The conflict was deep inside me. It was and still is a difficult pill to swallow. It was a true conflict in my soul. In some ways I took Lacie’s falsely accused incarceration personally. How could Lacie be punished for the crimes that had been committed against me when none of the men who violated me had ever been charged?

How does that happen?

In some strange way it appeared that Lacie was paying for the crimes that had been committed against me! It has all been a real life nightmare.

She has suffered huge losses since she was first arrested in August 2006.

HUGE!!!

It took months for me to comprehend what had happened to Lacie. In July 2019, after meeting with her attorney and seeing Lacie for the first time in 17 years , my pursuit for truth and justice began to build. The problem was I did not know where to begin or how to process it.

I didn’t know what to do.

That was over four years ago!!!

Now, the light at the end of the tunnel has gone from a dim 5 watt bulb to a bright bold light that shines in the darkness removing the shadows that have been hiding the truth for far too long.

Truth matters. Justice matters.

As much as it matters to us, it matters so much more to Our Heavenly Father.

He is the creator of all - truth and justice . He even gives instruction to judges on how to rule over difficult cases in Deuteronomy 1:17 .

Oh, how I wish one of the judges had allowed for the truth to be revealed when she had the opportunity to do so.

Listen to the testimony of University of Denver Law Professor Justin Marceau in Lacie’s Clemency video. In it, he tells of a judge who approached him regarding Lacie’s innocence and procedural errors that had taken place in her case which were keeping her incarcerated .

Thankfully, things are much brighter today.

Lacie and I have both learned that He is greater than any grudge we could hold.

He is greater than any injustice either one of us has ever endured.

Lacie and I have both endured through these experiences and learned so much along the way. We have even grown closer than we could have ever imagined! In fact, when we both began fighting life threatening illnesses on April 15, 2020, we had no idea we would be as close as we are today!

In fact, we are grateful for each day of life and health we have. We want to make the most of the days we have been given.

What have Lacie and I learned?

God is good. His mercy endures forever.

You may ask,

“ But, what about those that brought false witness against her and those that violated me sexually? ”

Well, God is big enough and kind enough to embrace them too.

Lacie and I are choosing to move forward.

We are excited about our future .

We also know that God is in the restoration business .

He is and will restore all of this and He will use it for good. That is what we desire!

We are so thankful for all the prayers and support each one of you has offered us on this journey!

I always know it is time to send updates regarding Lacie when I begin to get phone calls and text messages asking me,

"How is Lacie?" or "Did I miss a Tale of Two Sisters update?"

I am so thankful that you care and that you are praying for us through these last few years.

Here is where we are today.

The Clemency process has begun for Lacie . Her attorney is finalizing plans to present Lacie’s case along with a video of interviews, the numerous character reference letters, the truth of her case, along with the value she continues to offer those on the inside and the outside.

We are preparing, Lacie is preparing , and more than anything, we are staying close to the heartbeat of God . We want to make sure we are hearing from Him correctly based on many signs, wonders, and prophetic words that have been spoken recently.

There is hope on the horizon. . . ! ! !

It has taken many years to get to this place in time. Many refer to Lacie as being like Joseph in the Bible . I can tell you, there are many more similarities between Lacie and Joseph each time I read or hear about Joseph’s ordeal, the betrayal he experienced, false accusations being brought against him, and the losses he experienced over the years.

My hope is that all of this is coming to an end for Lacie and that it will be as triumphant as it was for Joseph. We are confident that all the pain and suffering will be for God’s glory, and that His plans will be fulfilled in the process.

It has been such a challenge to overcome for me as well. In 2010, I learned of Lacie’s incarceration. At the time, I was unaware of the truth in all that had taken place and caused her to be incarcerated. As well, I had been advised to “not get involved” by private investigators I was working for and being trained by. This all changed when a friend of Lacie’s called me on October 15, 2018, to let me know that Lacie’s case had been picked up by an Innocence Project.

This is when I put my toe in the water to do what I could to help and assist. Since then, God has met me each day and provided resources, understanding, and hope in how to pursue justice for Lacie.

It has been an emotional roller coaster ride, to say the least. To say I went from having a toe in the water to being fully immersed is an understatement . One thing is for sure, there have been many lifelines thrown our way when we felt like we were going under. Those lifelines have been the answers to many prayers that have been lifted on our behalf. Lacie and I know this is the beginning of something bigger than we could ever imagine.

For those of you that are reading about Lacie’s ordeal for the first time, I would like you to know this:

I have never met or known a woman to stand with integrity the way Lacie does.
She serves in love and honors others . It is how she operates.
Lacie has never given up . She reminds me that it is not in our DNA. Even in April 2020, when evidence of a lung infection went undiagnosed, lockdowns began, and medical care was not made available, Lacie persevered in faith .
She uses her talents to motivate and mentor others .
She continues to pursue her college education , serve on the council of her church, provide an outlet for women to receive prescription eyeglasses , and offers her support to others when needed .

This is only a small portion of what I witness and experience when I talk to Lacie.

She is resourceful, and hopeful, and applies her faith daily.

There are so many limitations for those of us on the outside that want to make a difference.

One thing there are no limits to doing is praising and thanking God for

ALL He is doing. ALL He desires to do. ALL He has done .

Would you join me in praising Him over Lacie, her attorney, and the plans to present all these cases of innocence?

It is with a heart of gratitude, expectation, and seeing His plans fulfilled in Lacie’s life that helps me to keep moving forward .

It is also through forgiveness that we have been able to see mountains move .

I am trusting God to continue this process because I have seen Him move many mountains over the last few years .

Now, we are preparing to see Lacie walk out of the prison gates, raising her hands to the heavens, giving Him praise, and stepping into the next phase of the journey that God is preparing .

It is evident that we are in the next step of faith and on the threshold of a new beginning.

Lacie is getting prepared for it and so are we!

A New Beginning - August 26, 2022

Sisters, Stephanie and Lacie reunite on July 17, 2019 at Denver Women's Correctional Facility.

***I am writing this detailed account of how Lacie and I were reunited after so many years to give a little bit of a foundation of how it all came about. In the next few weeks, I will be sending an update that will be a testimony of how God uses all things for His good. ALL!!!

On October 15, 2018, I received a phone call that would FOREVER change my life, my understanding, and ultimately, my purpose. It was an answer to prayer that I didn’t even know I needed. I had just finished praying a prayer, telling God that I would figure out how to go see my sister, Lacie, when I returned to work as a flight attendant.

Within moments of submitting my plans into His hands, I would receive a phone call from a 303 area code. I identified it as being from Colorado and after listening to the message that had been left, I was awestruck. It was probably the quickest answer to a prayer I had ever received . It was a call from one of Lacie’s best friends, Nora. A friend from her childhood. A friend had stepped in to advocate and seek justice for the horrible injustice that had been dealt Lacie. This friend was calling to tell me, “You have evidence to support her innocence.” Indeed, it was not a call I had ever expected.

It brought up the memories of the hope we both had in the summer of 2002. Lacie and her three-year-old son had come to live with me. It was my offer to help her escape some of the ongoing challenges presented by her upbringing. Neither one of us was prepared or equipped to withstand the challenges of living together for the first time. Sadly, one month later, Lacie returned to Denver. Soon after this, I was not doing well emotionally or physically and was willing to take the doctor-recommended medical leave of absence from work. The doctor suspected burnout. Nothing a three-week break from work couldn’t cure. In reality, the leave brought more doom and gloom upon me when I lost my well-paying job.

In the following year, Lacie would periodically write and call but I had nothing left in me to give. She was getting married, expecting her second son, and had invited me to the wedding. For me, things had changed. I had been sinking fast into a deep dark hole of depression and was unable to recover without being hospitalized and eventually medicated. I felt alone, and isolated, and did not know what to do. That was in 2003. It seems like a lifetime ago for both Lacie and me.

Within a few years, she would be living her dream life, being a mother to her two sons, a wife to her husband, and caring for them all in their home in the mountains. Also, Lacie and her husband were both actively involved and serving in a church. They had done it, they had turned their life around and gotten on their feet.

As well, I was returning to work in a new career as a flight attendant with a major airline. I had been able to gain support, turn things around, and move forward in my life too. Although I had not heard from Lacie in a few years, I thought of her frequently. “I had tried” was often what came to me. “I had tried” to have a relationship with Lacie and I was resolved that whatever was to come would eventually work itself out. Eventually.

Years later in 2010, I was taking a class to become a Private Investigator. I thought it would be a great compliment as a second career. I was used to doing more than one job at a time. I could do it when I wasn’t flying and since I had so much success in finding family, my own family, I thought I could use a little formal education with the little bit of experience that I had. It was during that class that I began to search once again for Lacie.

I found her “My Space” page, but it had not been updated in quite some time. I searched and found a family member and reached out via Facebook, however, there was no response or reply to my question, “How is Lacie?”

Where was Lacie?

It became my biggest question that I wanted to find the answer to. So, during a class lecture one day, I began a new search. This time I went to the Colorado Department of Corrections, searched for an inmate, and there she was. Her picture. Her face. Her. Lacie. Standing in front of the black and white measurements to show her general height.

It was a fear of mine, that Lacie would end up in prison. It was evident to me that her childhood did not offer the best environment for growing up. Her parents - mother and “father”, the man that raised her, were challenged with addictions and Lacie was the one who managed to keep the household together. She cleaned, cooked, and was responsible for her little sister. As a young girl, Lacie did all of this while going to school. I had always wanted something better for her. I had desired for her to be in a drug-free/alcohol-free home. Little did I know, that would be the least of my concerns.

Because of what I learned in the PI class, I knew how to obtain arrest records. After seeing where my sister was living and the charges that were keeping her there, I was conflicted. At least she was safe, I hoped. At least she wasn’t subjected to an environment of drugs and alcohol. What was evident to me after reading her charges and comparing her record to a co-defendant in the case was this, she likely did not have a good attorney.

Fast forward to the fall of 2018, when my prayer to connect with my sister was answered so quickly with a phone call. During that call, I learned my sister’s case had been picked up by the Innocence Project. I swung into action and did what I could, even going to get an affidavit notarized stating she had lived with me during the time she was accused of things she never did. It would be my first step into the “justice” system and learning how things don’t always appear to be what they are, including the charges brought against my little sister, Lacie.

As 2019 approached, I assumed that the affidavit with a declaration of truth that I submitted on behalf of my sister would be acknowledged, whoever was in charge would recognize she was wrongfully convicted, and I would get a call that she had been released.

WRONG!!!

It doesn’t happen that way, the way it happens on TV, the way it happens on the primetime TV show Bull. Nope, not at all. In fact, many things do not happen the way they are presented on TV. With no understanding of what to do or how to see my sister, I called Nora and arranged to meet with her in Denver after one of my flights.

At this time, I was flying my work trips in and out of Denver. I had changed my base years earlier and was “commuting” from Houston in order to work without having to always be on call. It was a lot less stressful that way and it is a common thing to do in the airline industry. In June 2019, I sat down with Nora and we had dinner steps away from the airport entrance. She updated me with an enthusiasm about Lacie’s “new” lawyer. Sadly, the previous lawyer with an Innocence Project affiliation had not been able to sustain doing work for free and had to close its doors. This new lawyer had taken on Lacie’s case because she saw the writing on the wall, recognized Lacie was innocent, and this attorney was willing to go to bat for her.

All of this was so foreign to me, I had no experience with lawyers fighting for innocence and I reached out to Lacie’s new attorney to get a better understanding. I eventually met with this new attorney in person on July 10, 2019. One week later, on July 17, 2019, I had my first approved visit with Lacie. It had been 17 years since I had seen her. I was nervous, to say the least!

As I entered the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, the place Lacie had called home since April 1, 2009, it resembled a TSA checkpoint at the airport. My ID was checked and verified, my shoes were removed, and I stepped through a metal detector, and was waved over with an additional wand for anything that had been undetected by the first detector. In some ways, it mimicked my daily routine of arriving at work.

The big difference occurred once I stepped out of security and began my approach to the first gated entrance. It was a thick metal gate connected to tall metal fences with razor wire at the bottom and at the top. After three monitored and managed entry points, I was escorted into a room where Lacie would soon arrive. I likened it to being a solo goldfish in a fishbowl.

My every move was seen by the guards in their raised “office” of computers, security monitors, and controls. The walls were painted with what I call a discount beige and dark green trim around every window frame. Let me tell you, there were LOTS of windows and therefore, lots of dark green trim. I stood in the large room not sure what to do, not sure which door Lacie would be coming through, not sure what to expect. It had been 17 years since I had last seen her, a young mom, a young woman, a young girl.

We would be allowed to meet in a separate room off the main room. I waited for what seemed like an eternity. Then, I heard the loud break of a door opening, the lock being released, and the door automatically moving to the side. There she was. There was Lacie in her uniform, if you will, a dark green scrubs-like outfit with tan boots. I was actually here, seeing her for the first time, in prison.

It was at that moment I didn’t know what to do or what I was allowed to do.

Do I go to her?

Am I allowed to move from “this” place where I stood in the middle of the fish bowl?

I didn’t want to make any false moves and get in trouble, get kicked out, or get Lacie in any more trouble. It was a new experience and I wasn’t sure how to respond.

That was when Lacie began walking quickly toward me, almost in a slight jog. As she approached me, she told me, “You’re not allowed to run in prison, but I don’t care.” We wrapped our arms around one another and embraced. Hugged one another. I wasn’t sure if it was allowed, but I didn’t care. I held her in my arms and didn’t want to let go.

We held each other and then took a step away to see each other's faces and hugged again. There had to have been a few tears streaming down our cheeks. Happy tears were being released after years of sorrow, sadness, and pain. I was only beginning to learn more about her ordeal and all she had endured in her pursuit of innocence after false accusations were brought against her with no proof.

It was glorious and agonizing all at the same time. I wasn’t quite sure what to do or what to say. I had never visited someone in prison that I cared about, that I loved, or that I missed. I can assure you, that I cared, loved, and missed Lacie more than words could describe. More than that, I missed what could have been what we both shared in our bond as sisters. Even though we never grew up with one another, we had a bond. A bond that was secured by having the same father. That was our connection and it was a strong one that had been uncovered in March 1992 when Lacie was 11 years old, I was 24.

For now, this was a new beginning for Lacie and me. A new beginning, just like her middle name Dawn is defined. A new beginning that had been introduced after a prayer and a phone call. It was a new beginning, indeed.

Stay tuned to hear more about another new beginning that took place recently. Plus, another testimony that has brought more focus and clarity for the two of us since our first reunion in 2019. We have done our best to document and account for all the miracles God has performed and I will share some of the recent miracles in the next Tale of Two Sisters.

A Tale of Two Sisters

Freer Than I Have Ever Been

One of the things Lacie often tells me is, “I am freer than I have ever been.”

This declaration causes me to stop and think. How is it possible that she can “be free” when she has been accused of crimes she never committed, sentenced to three separate “12 Years to Life” sentences, and due to state laws, must confess guilt to the crime she never committed in order to be eligible for parole? How is that possible?

In many ways, Lacie is “freer” than many of us living “on the outside” . I have taken note of her expression of freedom and determined that I too will live a life untangled by my own self-imposed restrictions and limitations. In these last few years, Lacie has been teaching me to live my fullest life, even in the shadow of breast cancer. A shadow that is diminishing more and more each day.

Last month, on June 1st , Ken and I were able to participate in a new chapter of Lacie’s life. She became a graduate of Trinidad State College , receiving her first Associate's Degree - Associate of Applied Science and graduating with the highest honors - Summa Cum Laude (4.0) . She will hopefully have her second degree completed by the end of this year.

Now, that is certainly applaudable, however, it gets better! Since Lacie’s incarceration, she has not seen her two sons together. When she entered the secured gates of Denver Women’s Correctional Facility on April 1, 2009, her sons were 5 and 9 years old. Her oldest son, Damyn, was taken out of state and has not seen his mom since then.

On June 1st, the day Lacie received her first degree, she also was greeted by her two sons - together - for the first time in over 13 years . It was remarkable and is a miracle in how it all came about. Pictures were taken, however, due to significant staffing shortages in the prison, they have not been printed yet. As soon as we get a copy, I will include them in an email! For now, I have attached a picture of a comparison from 2007 and a collage I created with current photos .

In addition to all of this exciting news, Lacie’s “Vision of Hope” - where glasses are provided for girls “on the inside” continues to flourish! As of right now, the program she began with help “on the outside” is almost up to 40 women that have been provided the gift of sight!

It was something God put on Lacie’s heart in March 2021 while she was recovering from her lung surgery . She was in the infirmary, isolated, and hurting. It was during this time that she began to pray and ask the Lord, “What do I do with my tithe money?”

The Lord began to unveil the plan of getting glasses for girls in prison . It was a process she had just completed months earlier when rules changed allowing eyeglasses to be sent into the facility from outside providers. It was significant for many reasons. One of the reasons was the eyeglasses offered for purchase through the DOC were not good quality, did not fit well (only one size), and broke easily.

It has been over a year since “Vision of Hope” began and it is being perfected . Girls have been able to contribute to either help purchase their own or to help another girl get glasses. A DBA has been created and a website is in the works. Details to follow.

It is truly a dream come true for Lacie to “begin having a business” and it is changing lives “on the inside”. It is a process I have learned is obviously not easy to achieve while incarcerated, without help, and without a vision! God certainly provided the vision and it is becoming more clear each day.

2022 is a year of many “firsts” and we continue to stand with Lacie. She in many ways continues to stand with you too. She is eager to meet everyone and begin a life “outside” of the locked gates and doors. That date has yet to be determined, however, we are hopeful it is coming.

Please stand with us in agreement as God MOVES some hearts of people in higher office. God has promised Lacie that, “He will do the unthinkable. He will do the unthinkable to set Lacie in a place of freedom. To set Lacie in a place of freedom.”

A Little Bit of the Backstory

Three years ago, on July 17, 2019, for the first time, I was taken through the doors and gates of the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility. They are the gates and doors that separate me from my sister Lacie Nelson.

On that morning, I unknowingly would begin a new chapter in my life. I had not seen Lacie in almost 17 years (July of 2002) and this would be the first day to move forward. I had only found out details of her case, trials, and the false accusations that put her here on nine months earlier in October 2018.

Ironically, she had been sentenced to the three “12 Years to Life” terms on April fool’s Day in 2009. All of this happened, without my knowledge or understanding. To say it was a life-changing moment is, to put it mildly - most certainly for Lacie and for me too.

In the three years since our reunion, I have come to learn a tremendous amount about life and how to pursue it from my little sister, Lacie. Her resolve to do well, move forward and make herself a better person while “on the inside” has motivated me in many ways.

I began documenting some of those details in emails I call “Tale of Two Sisters” and every month or so I attempt to keep everyone updated and aware of what is going on in Lacie’s life and mine. It has been a journey I would have never expected. It has been a journey that has revived my faith, patience, and understanding of things I don’t always agree with or may not want to accept.

In the process, Lacie and I have developed a relationship that has brought us closer than we would have ever expected. We have stood by one another with life-changing/altering illnesses that in many ways have defied the odds from one moment to the next. As you may recall from previous updates, our medical experiences began on April 15, 2020 - mine became a battle with breast cancer, and Lacie’s became a battle with an overlooked lung infection that developed into masses and were removed in March 2021. It required that two lobes of her right lung be removed. All of these challenges were being faced with the threat of a pandemic with an illness that could/would cause injury to our breathing and lungs.

It has been intense and it has been worth every effort required to get to where we are today, the beginning of a new chapter.

WORDS…. I don’t know how many it will take to express the relief, gratitude, amazement, joy, awe, and wonder of ALL that the Lord has brought Ken and me through in the last two years during my unexpected breast cancer journey!

I am still shocked that it has been two years! Here is a quick review and update:

It began on 2/19/20 when I was woken up with a stabbing pain in my right breast that brought me to tears. I had no idea what was going on, yet I knew it was like NOTHING I had ever felt before.

That was followed up by a prayer/Bible study on March 2nd where ironically, the spiritual roots of breast cancer were discussed. I had already looked into this subject and considered it a godsend that we were able to talk about it with others. Ken and I were given some encouragement on what to consider, Biblically. It was a very helpful evening for many reasons!!! The next month after falling - it was actually a very funny event and we all wish we had a video of it - I opted to go to the doctor and made an appointment for April 15, 2020. I believe God used that fall as a catalyst to get me to the doctor for my annual physical and to discuss the breast pain which had returned a few days before the appointment.

When I returned home, there was a card in the mail from my sister Lacie. Inside was a HOPE bracelet -see photo- that she made for me! Crazy coincidence!!??

I was later referred to MD Anderson after a mammogram and ultrasound revealed a suspicious tumor. They did numerous biopsies and confirmed the diagnosis on 4/23/2020. It was the day before my 53rd birthday. The fight was on!!!

That is how my journey and roller coaster with breast cancer began. In some ways, it was more challenging than I ever expected. In other ways, I am very fortunate to have made it through without needing chemo and choosing not to have radiation. Whichever way you look at it, it has all worked out for good and I am blessed beyond measure!!! Ken and I both!!

Today, March 29, 2022, I had my one-month follow-up to the Diep Flap procedure (double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction) that was done on March 1st at Methodist Hospital in Houston. It has been four weeks of moving slowly, lots of pain meds, and dealing with some minor complications that required a drain to remain in my abdomen for these entire four weeks.

The results of my surgery were seen even more vividly after bandages and glue were removed this morning and OH MY GOODNESS!!! I look amazing and my relocated “abdomen” has never looked better. I say “abdomen” because this is where the tissue was taken from to reconstruct the breasts after the double mastectomy - removal of breast tissue. I actually had to gain weight in order to be eligible for the procedure and it was worth every pound I gained!!!!

It gets better….Although in November 2020, cancer was detected in a lymph node and it was devastating to hear, I was told two weeks ago that “No cancer was detected in the breast tissue or lymph nodes that were removed!”

You may ask, “Well, then why did you have to have your breasts removed if there was no cancer?” Prevention. I had the first tumor removed from my right breast in November 2020. Ten months later, cancer was discovered in the left breast and I did not want to have to deal with another recurrence! Those challenges (breast tissue) have now been removed!!!

As an additional preventative, I have opted to treat my entire body for cancer. I don’t want to end up being told “you are cancer free” only to have a circulating tumor cell find another area of my body and begin building another cancerous tumor! There are options to treat our entire body with minimal issues and cost. I’ll talk more about this next time.

Blessings to you all and MANY THANKS for being a part of this journey with me and for PRAYING!!! It certainly made a difference and brought me through numerous challenging times!! It has most certainly been a roller coaster ride with lots of ups and downs!

The Blessings Are Overflowing - March 23, 2022

It has taken me longer than expected to put together in words ALL of the answers to prayer that Lacie and I have experienced since the beginning of this year . What started off looking a little dim has certainly turned out to be a little brighter - each day, each week, and now each month!

I talk to Lacie almost every day. She has made the effort to call and check on me each day before going into my surgery (double mastectomy with immediate reconstruction - Diep flap) on March 1st and every day since then. Additionally, I have received numerous cards from her, the other girls she resides with at Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, and MANY of you. It has been a tremendous blessing with lots of encouragement and compassion felt each day the mail arrives!

So many prayers were answered for Lacie as well. After her diagnosis of thyroid cancer on January 4th, she was told she would need to have her thyroid removed on March 1st. We thought that was pretty amazing that both of our surgeries would be on the same day.

Fortunately, about 10 days before her scheduled surgery , she was taken to see a specialist at a hospital that most inmates are not taken to in Denver. She was seen by a very upbeat and optimistic doctor who told her that they are NOT going to remove her thyroid , however, they would do regular tests to monitor the growth and status of the suspicious nodules. He let her know that thyroid cancer is slow-growing and has a less than 1% death rate.

Lacie left that appointment with newfound hope, peace, and joy . It was as if the doctor not only provided an outlook we did not expect, but he also, as her doctor, assured her we would advocate for her care . It was music to our ears and made us confident in this, “His ways are not our ways - His ways are higher.” Isaiah 55:8-9

Every time I hear from Lacie, I hear about the things she is accomplishing. She truly never gives up and it is apparent that God is most definitely working things out for good and equipping her to get things done that she would have NEVER done if she were not there. It has been a joy and a struggle to be a part of seeing and hearing it all. As challenging as it is to accept where she is, the blessings are too numerous for me to list. They are constant - daily . It inspires us to keep pressing on. We know it is bringing others more hope as well. Lacie and I are not giving up because we have learned that “with God, all things are possible.” It is as if we are watching God’s word unfold every step of the way since we reconnected in July 2019.

Mark 10:27

Jesus looked at them and said, “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” (ESV)

Ever since Ken and I began learning of the false accusations that were brought up against Lacie and the outrageous sentence that she was given, we have done our best to communicate with her attorney for direction on what can be done. Thankfully, Lacie has a very skilled and knowledgeable attorney that has seen right through the poor court-appointed representation Lacie received in her previous trials. So many things could have been done differently to prevent this unfortunate sentencing, however, as we know, God does indeed work all things for good .

Romans 8:28

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. (ESV)

I wanted to at least send an update of all the blessings, peace, and hope we have BOTH experienced in the last few months :

There are plans to have a Chapel built for DWCF - Denver Women’s Correctional Facility. When the Captain was tasked with finding two Christian women to be a part of the process, Lacie and her roommate Jana were the two that he thought of. They are now part of a planning committee to oversee the design and plans for the Chapel . How amazing is that?
College classes have resumed via zoom. Lacie is currently taking three courses this semester and is in class three days a week. She will be completing two Associates Degrees by the end of this year. They will also have a graduation ceremony this summer for one of her Associate Degrees and we plan on being there!!
Lacie’s Vision of Hope continues to grow with girls coming to her offering to donate to help others. This is only possible because Lacie has found a way to work within the guidelines of the facility and has received permission to do so. It requires coordination from others on the “outside” and she has begun recruiting additional friends to meet the increased demand of girls needing prescription glasses. Absolutely spectacular!!!
She maintains a full schedule and continues to be able to exercise and take care of herself . She makes sure to take time to rest on the weekends due to the increased demand on her schedule during the week. They have come a long way from being in 23 hour lockdowns during Covid.
As mentioned earlier, I had the surgery on March 1st. It was a 12-hour operation that provided me with reconstructed breasts from my own tissue - no implants were needed which was a BIG answer to prayer.
I have been able to be home resting and recovering and will continue to do so for at least another three weeks.
The pathology that was completed on my breast tissue and lymph nodes that were removed came back. There was NO CANCER found in the tissue! This is encouraging and it has taken a lot to get to this point. We hope that these recent steps will prevent any future recurrence.

WE - Lacie and I - are anticipating great things to continue this year . This is just the beginning. We have certainly had to trust God each day knowing that.

Lacie’s attorney also has plans and funding to move forward in our search for justice . We are trusting God with the timeliness, wisdom, and direction of how to do so. We are hopeful!

A Sibling Reunion & Lacie's Birthday on September 15th - September 14, 2022

This year, there have been several "firsts" for Lacie and me. Some of the “firsts” were unexpected and unwelcome, others were serious and challenging. I think it is common for many around the globe right now, especially for those who are incarcerated. There have been many changes “on the inside” of prisons since the pandemic began. As well, there has been a significant reduction in staff and guards which has greatly impacted the daily routines of those who are incarcerated, including the women at DWCF - Denver Women's Correctional Facility. It has made a difficult situation even more challenging for all. Fortunately, visitation has been able to stay open most of the weekends with only a few changes.

A few months ago, in July, I sent you an update, Tale of Two Sisters - “Freer Than I Have Ever Been” - a copy is included at the bottom of this post. It included details about Lacie’s graduation and the miraculous reunion that took place with both of her sons. Multiple miracles occurred in that first week of June 2022.

Lacie’s biggest desire was to have both of her sons there to visit her , for the first time, since she entered the gates of Denver Women’s Correctional Facility on April 1, 2009 . It had been over thirteen years since she had seen her two boys together! (Pictures attached in this email.)
Lacie earned her first Associate’s Degree . She has achieved NUMEROUS milestones in her education, however, this was the first that we were all able to witness her accomplishments and be able to attend. (We are still waiting on these pictures.)
Having a graduation "on the inside" where family and guests were allowed to mingle with Lacie and the fellow residents of DWCF. It was a great experience. It was also another first!

There were lots of firsts. It was a BIG DEAL!!!

Little did we know that two months later, on August 12, 2022 , there would be another first.

A sibling reunion and another BIG DEAL!!!!

I will do my best to explain how this came about and once you hear for yourself, you will probably agree, that it is pretty amazing!

On July 17, 2019, I saw Lacie for the first time in 17 years . (For more details, please read the blog "A New Beginning" dated August 26, 2022 - or see below at the end of this post). It was most certainly "A New Beginning” for Lacie and me and it was a long time coming. Four months later, in November 2019 , another unplanned “New Beginning” would occur. Our oldest brother and the firstborn of our father found us. He didn’t even know we existed.

Here is how it happened!

On November 5, 2019, I received an email that had been received and forwarded to me from a cousin that is active on Ancestry.com. The email would explain how this individual had been adopted and was searching for his father’s birth family. That email was from our brother. He had found us!

Long story short, I had tried finding our oldest brother in the early 90s and after a few roadblocks , I had given up. I often wondered how I could/would eventually find him. Now, years later and months after seeing Lacie for the first time in a long time, God was doing another miracle in continuing to restore our family . It is a promise and dream I have been searching for since 1990.

So, later that day, on November 5, 2019, I connected with our big brother Wayne and his wife, Margaret! On 11/19/19 , all of us met halfway from our homes at my friend’s house in El Campo, TX. On that day, Lacie called and was able to talk to Wayne and hear his voice for the first time . It was the best we could do in having all of us be "together" at the same time. (Pictures attached in this email.)

Fast forward a couple of years and some delays that included multiple challenges including but not limited to:

the pandemic
visitation being closed down
constant lockdowns in the prison for 23 hours a day
the overlooked lung infection that Lacie endured
numerous lab samples being done improperly - within the prison health system
two lobes of Lacie's right lung being removed
her recovery from lung surgery during a covid outbreak
isolation in the prison’s infirmary - a BIG DEAL!!!
me (Stephanie) being diagnosed with breast cancer - twice
having three surgeries myself and preparing for a fourth

The MOST AMAZING thing happened . . . . ! ! ! !

WE HAD A SIBLING REUNION!!!

(Insert applause and cheering!!!)

The three of us , along with Ken and Margaret , our spouses, were able to be together for the first time!

Yes, that’s right!!

We had a sibling reunion on August 12, 2022!

The miracles just keep coming and we are beyond blessed to have each other in our lives. (Pictures attached below.)

There was something very specia l that we experienced during our sibling reunion. The love and support for one another permeated the DWCF Visitation room . Laughter erupted from our table, even while being overseen by the guards at DWCF. During our sibling reunion, we discussed the real possibility of there being additional siblings! We know of at least two others - the second born (no contact since 1995) and the youngest who was located in March 2020. Please keep them in your prayers.

No one else could have understood what it was like to be together for the first time. The value and strength we drew from one another were remarkable. Our common mannerisms and facial features were only some of the topics we discussed. Mostly, we sat with Lacie and admired her passion, zest for life, and the pursuit of her faith, even in the most challenging of circumstances that she has had to endure for the last 13 + years.

To be honest, I shed a few tears. Some moments were just too much for words . That emotion and intensity increased when Wayne, our oldest brother , suggested we play a game called “I Wish” . The tears showed up in all of us as we took our turns expressing our greatest desires for Lacie to be exonerated of the horrible accusations that ambushed her and her family so many years ago.

It was remarkable to hear each one of us express our deepest “I wish” desires for Lacie:

Wayne - “I wish we could all get up, walk out of this room, through those gates, past the razor wire, and leave this place behind, forever, right now, and no one would stop us.”

Lacie - “I am spiritually free. Now, I want to be physically free. I am ready to get out, leave this place, move to Texas, and have a steak dinner with A-1 Sauce.”

Margaret - “I wish a judge would stop and take the time to hear and see the truth in this case.”

Stephanie - “Let’s start making a list of the people you want to have at your steak dinner. I am preparing for you to be with us.”

Ken - “I am ready for your mission here at DWCF to be completed and for your next mission to begin in Texas.”

My mom, Carole, via text - Earlier that morning, my mom sent a scripture. I was able to get a Bible from the guards and we were able to read it together. Psalm 128:1-2 “Blessed is everyone who fears the Lord, who walks in his ways! You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands, you shall be blessed and it shall be well with you.”

There were many pauses and moments of silence, as we wiped the tears from our eyes. Soon, very soon, we believe that each one of these wishes will become answers to our prayers. We are expecting it.

We know it will be a BIG DEAL!!!

As this first sibling reunion came to a close, we all held hands and prayed together for the first time . Ever. Then, as the clock approached 3:00 PM MST - we all said our goodbyes and hugged Lacie. It was difficult for the four of us to leave, to walk away and leave Lacie behind .

“Lord, hear our prayers,” was a cry from the depths of our souls. “Lord, hear our prayers.”

Wayne and Margaret spent the next day, Saturday, with Lacie. Ken and I were able to be with her for a few hours on Sunday before returning home. It was a weekend for the record books!

A BIG DEAL!!!

Something inside of me is convinced that God’s fingerprints were all over us during all these years when we were apart ! His hand brought us together .

We will continue to hold on to His hand. To trust Him. To see how He brings us closer together. Closer in our walk with Him.

I am convinced that if you have never trusted God to walk with you, YOU CAN!!!

Rest for the Weary - February 7, 2022

This is a little longer than most "Tale of Two Sisters" updates.

It includes some significant news regarding both of us.

We appreciate ALL of the prayers and support!

Lacie, like many of us, has endured a significant amount of challenges and trauma throughout the last few years. We learned of Lacie’s recent thyroid cancer diagnosis on January 4, 2022, after months of mishaps with her blood work being drawn improperly. She had been waiting since August to have a biopsy done. That finally happened on December 22, 2021. Now, we have both found ourselves facing the undesirable diagnosis and word that no one wants to hear spoken over them, cancer.

How can one word have such an emotional impact? How can one word coupled with a medical diagnosis be so challenging? The other question that is hardest for me to reflect on is, how will my sister get through this challenge when the medical care inside the gated community where she resides is not equipped to handle it? How?

The other side of the coin is this, I have been given access to exceptional surgeons, doctors, therapies, and treatments all along my journey with breast cancer. Oh, how I wish my sister had access to the same.

What I find encouraging is that Lacie has not given up in spite of all she has been through. She commented to me recently that “it is not in my DNA to give up.” I could hear her courage . I could hear her determination . I could hear her ability to trust that there is a way and she is finding it, often with rest .

One way she finds hope and keeps the determination to not give up is by helping others . She does this in many ways. I will do my best to describe one of the ways she gives back. I hope I do it justice.

There are many challenges that girls face while being incarcerated . Believe it or not, they face some of the same challenges that we do on the outside with a need for basic provisions being met for medical, vision, dental, hygiene, and food . This is where Lacie began seeing a need and putting her money where her heart was .

Over a period of time, she saved her tithe money - basically, she obediently set aside ten percent of any financial support or gifts she received , just as the Lord commands us to do. Then she began asking the Lord what she was supposed to do with it, how did God want her to use these funds?

What began was a project she calls “Vision of Hope” . Through her efforts, she was able to get permission to have glasses sent in from outside vendors. It was a process that required many steps and assistance from trustworthy and caring friends on the “outside”. After learning what could be done and what was allowed, she was able to provide 10 girls with glasses in 2021 . The 11th is in process and she continues to set aside her 10% and use the funds so girls can see, read, and overall have a better quality of life .

You may ask, well, doesn’t the prison supply glasses? Well, if you want to call it “glasses”. There is only one style for both men and women. They are not made well, do not last, and do not fit properly. There is also a cost. It has proven to be more affordable to order them from the outside. Lacie was able to get permission to do this on a case-by-case basis and order glasses for girls . The results have impacted many! You can trust that whatever financial support you send to her, it is going to be used wisely and prayerfully .

Just the other day, the Lord put another girl on Lacie’s heart that needed glasses. The first obstacle to overcome is having a current eyeglass prescription which doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it is. Eye exams are not always accessible since the pandemic began requiring lockdowns and restricting providers from coming “inside” and providing assistance.

The lack of eye care is one of the many things that has impacted their quality of life. If the girls have a current eyeglass prescription , Lacie is able to assist them. This includes glasses for reading. Many do not have what we consider a basic necessity - reading glasses - and what Lacie has been able to assist in providing has truly brought vision and hope! It has been remarkable and such a blessing to have her describe the process and how it blesses the girls she is able to assist.

Often, Lacie calls me on a regular basis with some sort of amazing God story . To tell you all of them will require writing a book of chapters describing His goodness working through her. It inspires me to not give up on my own cancer battle. Her faithfulness in honoring God has been a tremendous asset in my life since we reunited in July 201 9. Each time she tells me about another way God has worked through her life to impact the girls she resides with and I tell her, “If you keep allowing God to keep using you like this, we may never get you out of there!”

Our goal is for her to have her freedom back and to be exonerated . We continue to pursue justice in her case and we will until the truth about the charges that were falsely brought against her are corrected. It has been a situation where the more we rest, the more God moves . Lacie and I are learning the value of “resting in the Lord”, literally .

Matthew 11:28-30 “Then Jesus said, ‘Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’” (ESV)

Ironically, we are both scheduled for surgery in the next month. I will be having a double mastectomy with reconstruction at Methodist Hospital in Houston on Tuesday, March 1st. Lacie will be having her right thyroid removed . She has growths on her left thyroid as well but they have not been biopsied yet. It is possible that she will have both of them removed. We are still waiting for the details. Her medical journey is very different than mine since I have access to providers, can call them, get copies of results, and see them without any restrictions. Lacie’s situation is pretty much the opposite and she has no control over any of it. She has to trust God in some big ways and IS!!!

I am believing God for creative miracles and for her thyroid to be restored completely.

I trust that many of you are finding the gentleness of Jesus to be real for you in this season . As well, that you are finding rest . I know that I often feel guilty for resting because I always want to be on the go doing something. One of the benefits of healing from cancer has been learning to “rest” in ways I have never been able to before . It has been a necessary learning experience and one that I have learned to embrace. Rest cannot be avoided. Remember, it is actually a commandment!!!

I know a few of you have asked how to actually be able to “visit” Lacie. One way to actually "visit" Lacie is via video. If that is something you are interested in doing, I have attached the “CODOC Visitor Application” below for you to begin the process. Once you have completed the application, include a copy of your ID - make sure the address on your ID and the application are the same - you can send it via email to:

For in-person visits, once the application has been processed and approved, you will be able to schedule a visit on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. I Received a Call from Lacie - January 4, 2022

This is my Christmas gift from Lacie - a cross she painted.

Today, it is the reminder I need what Jesus has already paid the price for us.

Today I received a call from Lacie.

That is common.

Her news was not.

She had an ultrasound done on her thyroid in September 2021 .

Since then, they have taken her blood at least 5 or 6 times in order to get her seen for a biopsy.

It has been mishandled each time!

It has been an ordeal and it is truly unacceptable.

The last draw was done in December, successfully, and the biopsy was completed on her right thyroid on 12/22/21 - FINALLY!!!

Today she was seen by her medical advisor at the facility.

It is capillary thyroid carcinoma.

Please keep her in your prayers and share her predicament with others that pray!!

Her case has been elevated to "emergency" status and she was told she will be seen in the next week at a Cancer Center in Denver .

She was told they will do one of four things to treat her:

Medication

Surgically removed

IV treatment

Radiation/Chemo (unlikely - depends on if it is found in her lymph nodes)

Oh, how I wish she could be getting the same care and treatments I have been able to receive for cancer!

I am heartbroken for her.

She has been through so much already!!!

I am considering writing a letter to the warden if it is ok with Lacie.

It is a journey we never expected.

Our health battles began on April 15, 2020 - the same day.

We are both battling cancer now.

Romans 8:28 All things work together for good for those that love God.

A few days ago, I received a letter in the mail from Lacie. She is currently enrolled in an English class and is working on a project. Her desire is to write a guide/instructions for girls/women when they come to live in the fine gated community also known as, Denver Women's Correctional Facility.

I am forwarding it to all of you because many of you have asked how you can help her and get in touch with her. It took a lot of effort for me to learn the "How To's" in the topics Lacie listed below. If you have questions about these, then this "Guide" she is writing is just for you!!! I am creating a "How to Guide" for my English class. The guide is to help others navigate the obstacles in supporting someone in prison. Many family members and friends have had to endure many difficulties along the way in learning how to communicate. With your help, this guide will address several of those issues.

Laying the Foundation - September 19, 2021

We can all agree, God has done some amazing things in all of our lives in the last year . Now, that is not to say it has been a year without grief, loss, despair, and sometimes, a twinge of hopelessness at times. In all the tragedies, we find moments of His hand of grace and mercy protecting us, and our hope is restored for another day .

Today, I am pleased to be able to tell you about the amazing things God has continued to do in Lacie’s life through her efforts and ability to trust, believe, and not give up. In the last couple of months, Lacie has taken on a new zest for living and is pursuing opportunities .

She has not given up. Actually, it is quite the opposite, she has taken on the task of helping others, improving herself, and laying a good foundation . We have no doubt that God is using her right where she is. I can hear it in her voice when she calls.

In one of our recent conversations, I came to an understanding that Lacie is being used by God in such mighty ways. I told her, “If you keep allowing God to use you there, we will never be able to get you exonerated!” I was half-joking and half-serious .

This is when my thoughts and cries for justice for Lacie began to transition. I know Lacie is being used by God. She has told me “I am content, I have a good life, and I am freer than most on the outside” and I can hear that in her voice . I can hear that coming out of her soul. It does not mean she has stopped fighting or standing for the “truth” to come out about her case. In fact, she has continued to live in the place where she is despite the challenges, despite the wrongful conviction. She has done it. For the last twelve + years, she has endured, trusted, and not given up .

The other thing she told me is she is laying a foundation for other girls that are hurting . She is helping them “live” in a place where many have chosen to give up and many do - one girl (I do not know her name) recently attempted “to jump” to remove herself from the pain of being in prison - from living at all - she was not successful, however, she is faced with having to reconcile her pain in a painful place while still being alive. It is in this place that Lacie has learned to thrive . She is making strides in this environment and THAT is the miracle we are witnessing. She is also helping others do the same, and is this includes me!

Seriously, how do you go from having pneumonia not being diagnosed and treated, to having a severe lung infection, to coughing up blood regularly, to having a 5.5-hour surgery to remove 2/3 of your lung, to recovering in an infirmary - isolated, to being able to run, exercise, and be better than you have ever been?

How do you do that, except with God’s hand covering, protecting, and renewing you?

This past year has been a tremendous year of experiencing God’s ability to reclaim our health, renew our strength, and restore our lives, together . I am in awe of how the prayers have been answered. I hope it encourages you all as well.

This past week, Lacie sent me pictures of her latest adventure. All during the pandemic last year, they were kept inside and were not able to go outside and experience the fresh mountain air of Denver. Things have improved this year and they are actually able to go out “in the yard” and walk, run, exercise, or just sit . Recently, it was offered to them to have an exercise structure installed. The challenge was a foundation needed to be put in place .

Lacie and a few other girls were told that this was the delay in having their exercise equipment installed. So, the girls - women - stepped up to the plate and took on the task to dig out the hole, set the forms, and pour the concrete! These girls did it all!!! Now, they had some instruction and some direction during the process, however, the point is, t hey showed up and offered to do it because a foundation was needed for them to enjoy their exercise experience outside .

Their reward? They were offered fresh fruits and vegetables! They were hungry for something they can’t get every day, if at all. They did it! It took days of hard work to accomplish this and THEY DID IT!! They worked hard. They did it together. They learned how to do something they had never done before and together they succeeded.

On August 22nd, soon after the concrete foundation had been completed, I received a phone call from Lacie. Their reward had arrived - they received their fresh fruits and vegetables! They had eaten BLT’s that day with fresh tomatoes! They all were experiencing a little bit of heaven on earth!

All in all, what I hear each time Lacie calls is that she has not given up .

Lacie is living a good life .

She is being healed and strengthened .

She is well .

She is laying the foundation for many things .

She is making a difference and she is thriving .

It is making a difference in mine as well.

I have needed a reason to not give up.

In August, Lacie began taking her additional college credit classes in English and History . She is loving learning!!!

I am so proud of her.

In the last few weeks, I had a dream that she was living in Texas with us and we were visiting our brother and his family.

In the dream, my sister-in-law had packed a bag of things to take to the beach. We were going to take Lacie to Corpus Christi. The funny thing is, she wanted to see the small town where our brother and his wife live first!!!

Just like Lacie.

She doesn't want to miss a thing!!!

The conversation we had in the days that followed has given me a lot of peace . You see, I struggle with the reality of what has happened to her. I am sometimes overwhelmed and overcome with grief about it and wish she could be here with us. When I tearfully told her how I felt, she replied, "I am free! I am happy! I have a good life!"

Who says that when they have three life sentences they are fighting!!??

Lacie says this!!!

Lacie is free because her life has been bought with a price and Jesus is making a way for her.

She is living every bit of Romans 8 and in the process is being renewed each day .

It is a miracle to witness, especially when we look back one year ago.

Many wondered if she would actually survive when she went to surgery in March of this year!!!

She did and more is to come!!!

Hello All!!!

I asked Lacie to send me a letter in her own words so you could hear from her the hope that remains, the peace that surrounds her, and the love she feels from each one of you.

Here is her letter to all of you:

Hello to all who support Stephanie and myself.

Whether you are someone who has been there since the beginning, for a short time, or have just begun this journey with us, I want to thank you so very much for all you do and all you mean to us.

Wow, what a crazy year already! After being sick for the last two years with lung issues, I finally was able to have the disease in my right lung removed. They had to remove 2/3 of my right lung to do so. There were many complications, yet God had me in the palm of his hand all throughout the process.

Do know I felt extremely supported with the flood of letters, cards, and financial support. All of it helped me get through each minute, especially when I was feeling as though I didn't want to go on. Recovery was not what I thought it would be. I was hoping to bounce right back. That was not and has not been the case. The exhaustion is all-consuming and it can last for days which is hard for me because I am active and always involved in so many things. Anything extra has literally had to take a back seat. God had literally forced me to "be still", to listen, and rest in him. It has not been easy!

Then came parole. There was so much time, effort, people, and money that went into showing support. How could I be a light to my community and prove all of my accomplishments? It was my goal and all of your letters supported that desire. I suspected that they wouldn't give me parole because of how the law is written. I am not admitting to something I didn't do just to pacify this establishment or take a class that I don't belong in.

However, I am a believing woman. God can do all things. I gave it all to him and if he wanted parole for me I would have received it. As you know, I did not make parole. My recovery from the and was quick. I have gotten "no" after "no" for years with my appeals. This was just another "no." Don't get me wrong, I did shed a couple of tears, however, the worst part is telling my kids! At this point they don't think my leaving here is ever going to happen. They do see that their mom continues to fight, never gives up, and perseveres. I have been away from them for 13 years. At this point, I do my best to validate how they feel. Please keep my two sons in your prayers.

Today, we are all moving forward. I still have a Federal appeal waiting for an answer. This can take as long as the judge wants/needs. My lawyer, family, and I still have a couple of options to get me the heck out of here. This will take more financial resources. My family is a bit drained from the last financial expense so we are asking for help for my lawyer expenses. If you can help or know someone who may be able to, we would be forever grateful. As you all know this is not cheap so anything can help. I know that prayer is first and foremost important, so please keep praying!

Know you are all loved, cared for, and are in our prayers and thoughts always.

The question now is, "What next?"

I spoke with Lacie tonight and she is requesting that her attorney move forward with the clemency process . Yes, you can continue to write letters to support her in that plea. We hope to create a video in order to tell her story because frankly, there is a lot to tell. It is another expense that we will need to cover .

In the meantime, there is a Federal Habeas Case that is pending in the Colorado courts right now. Lacie referred to this in her letter above. It was filed on May 10, 2021 , after taking over one year to prepare . It will hopefully provide Lacie with an opportunity to be heard again. So many details were left out in her original trials and additional details have come to the surface since then . Her attorney would love to have the opportunity to reveal these details.

On a side note, Lacie has been asked to submit an application with the hopes that she will be able to attend college-level classes that are scheduled to begin next month. DWCF will be receiving a Pell Grant to help with getting basic credits to go towards her degree. She already has over 100 credits to be applied toward a degree. This will enhance what she has already achieved .

Lacie is amazing, dedicated, and has not given up!! Please pray that this opportunity comes through for her.

First of all, your prayers are ALWAYS what we are grateful for!!! It is truly amazing to look back and see ALL of the ways God has moved in our lives this last year!! Truly miraculous at times!! Keep praying and PRAISING God with us!

Time to Plant Some Seeds - June 19, 2021

Lacie presented me with this picture frame done by "quilling". A gift I treasure.

The other day, I received a call from Lacie. She was in good spirits as she told me about her day. When I read her this email and its title, she replied, “There is a woman here that has a saying, ‘ Bloom where you are planted.’ ”

This update has a theme.

We can only bloom if we are planted.

If we want to bloom, we must plant seeds .

I am thankful for both processes.

Here is our latest.

About an hour after I sent my last email update “Tale of Two Sisters - A Post Parole Hearing Update,” I received a call from Lacie's attorney. Please let me know if you did not receive it.

On that day, June 2, 2021 , the Colorado Legislature was having a hearing in regard to HB 21-1320. Lacie’s attorney informed me that even though this House Bill would not directly affect Lacie’s current situation, she thought it would be a good time to “plant some seeds” and to get the word out about Lacie and others who have been WRONGFULLY CONVICTED .

It was 10:30 pm Denver time when I was finally able to share my three-minute testimony.

The unexpected echo and feedback on my computer were beyond distracting! I didn’t know what to do and I did not have time to fix it. I’m not a sound technician and I did not have a headset! I leaned in and focused as best I could! Additionally, the three-minute clock was ticking. I had to complete my statement. There was no time to waste .

My eyes were focused .

My heart was racing .

My voice was hopefully being heard .

I was speaking for Lacie .

I was proud to do so!

Approximately fifty other people had signed up to speak FOR, AGAINST, or to AMEND HB 21-1320. You can read my statement in the attachments below: “Three Minutes with Colorado HB 21-1320” .

As you know, under the current Colorado law, the ONLY WAY that Lacie will EVER be allowed to be paroled and LEAVE PRISON is if she admits guilt. She will not do that. There is no way out for her as long as she maintains her INNOCENCE .

A change HAS to be made!!!

And I am still so amazed at how God opened the door to allow my voice to be heard!

What a miracle!!!

Isaiah 54:17

17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord, and their righteousness is of me, saith the Lord.

One letter that was submitted for Lacie’s parole hearing included statistics and details from the Korey Wise Innocent Project in Boulder, Colorado . I have included some of the details here.

Wrongful convictions are likely to occur in 3-5% of criminal cases .
Perjury or false accusations are most common in wrongful convictions . This has been determined in 60% of the 2,788 exonerations in the National Registry of Exonerations (NRE)
This includes cases where false accusations of child sexual abuse were made during high-conflict divorce cases to gain leverage and custody of children . It is more common than you think.
It is common for innocent people to plead guilty and/or take a plea deal to avoid a trial and harsher sentence . Lacie chose NOT to do this. She turned down a four-year probation offer in favor of a trial. She believed the “justice” system worked. Her friends and family believed this as well. Everyone knew Lacie was innocent.
The justice system will allow for an appeal , however, the focus is more on whether there was a fair trial . It is not on whether the jury’s verdict is accurate.

It is even more insulting and challenging for those of us that are victims of these types of crimes. This includes me .

In the last two and a half years, I have begun learning the truth behind my sister’s incarceration and her innocence . I have had to reconcile that she has spent more time in prison than ANY of the ones who raped, molested, and violated me. That is the truth.

I realize the conflict it creates for people like me, a victim of sexual assaults - yes there is an “s” on the end of assault because it happened more than once - and the predators who did this to me never spent a day in jail, even though it was known that it happened.

Likewise, Lacie was a victim of a heinous act as well .

Despite the challenges that Lacie and I have faced, we still have hope .

People are now praying for us .

People are writing to Lacie .

We both have support .

We are believed .

And many of you are standing with her , and waiting to greet her and help her once she is exonerated and released .

That is tremendous .

We are beyond blessed .

A brief update from Stephanie :

The “lost” cancer treatment I mentioned in my previous email was located and recovered. The treatment was given intravenously on Monday, June 14th. It was created out of the cancer tumor cells found in my blood and will circulate through my body to keep the cancer cells from replicating. Eventually, they will die off. It will be working in my body for approximately six months. This allows my whole body to be treated for cancer , not just the area where the tumor was found.

Below is the three-minute testimony I gave to the Colorado Legislation:

June 2, 2021

Three-Minute Testimony with Colorado HB 21-1320

My name is Stephanie Mays. I work for a major airline and I am based in Denver, Colorado.

I am also a victim of sexual crimes that occurred in my youth where I was drugged, raped, and molested, in places where we expect to be safe -my home, my church, and a doctor’s office.

Ten years ago, I learned about charges that had been brought against my little sister during a family child custody battle that didn’t even include her children. Because she is innocent, she refused a 4-year plea deal and chose an option granted us within our justice system and was penalized with three egregious sentences of 8 years to life and two 12 years to life terms. I have come to learn more about what happens when sex offenders are innocent under the current Sex Offender Treatment Program, they remain in prison with no way out.

What puzzles me about the Sex Offender Treatment Program, the SOMB, their 25-member board who manage it, and the lawmakers present here tonight is the absolute fear of granting the innocent access to classes in order to meet requirements for parole.

In the meantime,, numerous violent offenders are released and granted parole when they have only served a portion of their sentence. What makes one violent crime redeemable and another not? Laws…. Laws that are written to protect citizens without any regard to the reality that many people are incarcerated for crimes they never committed. It happens and it happened to my little sister, Lacie Nelson.

She is in her 13th year of being incarcerated for a crime she never committed. She would be more than willing to take the classes that are required with her charges/accusations, however, she can only do so if she admits guilt to the crime of being a sex offender. Because she is not willing to admit guilt, she is therefore, not eligible for parole. She will remain locked up, innocent, and unable to exit the gated community on Havana St. in Denver, Colorado UNLESS she admits guilt.

I encourage you, the lawmakers of Colorado, to question the motivation behind this type of Sex Offender Treatment Program and its effectiveness. Especially when offenders who are innocent are not even able to access it and receive credit in order to be deemed compliant and eligible for parole.

No one wakes up and decides, “I want to be a victim of a sexual assault.”Likewise, no one expects to be labeled a sex offender when they are innocent of the crime they have been charged with and have no way to meet the one-sided legal requirements.

Sadly, and ironically, these are both in my family of origin - the abused and the accused.

Do your research lawmakers, Human Rights Watch has outlined the numerous ways that laws and requirements for sex offenders don’t actually help the victims.

I quote. “The reality is that 'sex offenders' are a great political target, but that doesn't mean any law under the sun is appropriate.”

The Sex Offender Treatment Program is NOT protecting victims, it is creating victims.

And it is time for a change.Please amend Bill 21-1320 - Sunset Sex Offender Management Board. Make treatment available and accessible for offenders without requiring an admittance of guilt.

A Post Parole Hearing Update - June 2, 2021

Lacie and I have been playing Scrabble since December 22, 2020 - It began with the word "exile"

One week ago, today, on May 26th, after much preparation and expectation, and believing the right thing would be done, I received the call from Lacie and heard her voice tell me, “I was denied parole. I am not compliant.” She went on to describe her meeting with the member of the Parole Board. I was hearing her describe what we all knew could happen. We had thought the Parole Board would have mercy on her. We thought things would go differently.

Isaiah 55:8-9

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts,

Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.

9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

So are My ways higher than your ways,

And My thoughts than your thoughts.

It was another event that represented a sign of injustice to us. Regardless, we know that Lacie’s situation is not out of God’s grip and it is certainly not out of God’s sight. It is true that in spite of how we see things, God’s hand has been on Lacie from the moment this crazy scheme of accusations was devised. Here is the good news, Lacie is well. She has come through the surgery, almost two months of isolation in the infirmary due to Covid outbreaks, and she is content . To be honest, we have a lot to be thankful for considering what she was dealing with all of last year. A serious lung infection during a pandemic with numerous lockdowns and limited access to medical care. In all, I believe we are witnessing a true miracle!

Honestly, this is NEVER what I wanted for Lacie . From the first time I met Lacie in 1992, I knew her adult life would not be easy; however, I have to admit, she has found a peace about where she is , and what she has been through over the last 15 years. It is truly remarkable to hear and witness. At other times, it is extremely painful. We have faith that it will eventually resolve itself. Lacie has a tremendous peace - most of the time - and is comforted in knowing and trusting that God has never left her side. Much of that peace, I believe, is a direct result of your prayers and support for her .

Moving forward, for those of you who are interested and reside in Colorado, there is a bill being considered by Colorado lawmakers that could provide Lacie and others that are in her situation a way out . For Lacie, it is a long shot. What we really need for her is exoneration .

There is currently a petition being looked at by a U.S. District Court Judge. We are waiting on the response and have been told it could take months. The final response was submitted by Lacie’s attorney to the U.S. District Court - District of Colorado on May 10, 2021 .

Currently, this is where our prayers should be focused . Please pray for the judge to see and hear the truth and that she will “justify the righteous and condemn the wicked.” What many of you know is that during Lacie’s previous trials, her co-defendants were in a battle for their lives as well. No one could testify for the other and the prosecution used this to pit the jury against Lacie - that is my opinion. We are hoping that the judge that is reviewing Lacie’s plea will grant a step in the right direction .

Deuteronomy 25:1

If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.

Please keep Lacie’s attorney and the U.S. District Court Judge in your prayers as this process moves forward . It has taken a lot of effort, courage, and tenacity for Gail and her staff to push this petition forward. The story of how Gail found out about Lacie’s case will make for a really good movie one day. Reality is, the story continues to unfold. It is tragic, painful and unbelievable all at the same time .

The letters you all have written for Lacie’s parole are definitely going to help . It may not be the last time we have to write a letter in support of Lacie. For now, it is really the only way we can “be there” for her. We can continue to trust and thank God for His plans. Lacie assures me, “He’s got this. He’s got me.”

Psalm 18:30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.

If God said it, we can believe and trust it to be true. For now, His Word is enough and knowing Him is even better. I am beyond thankful that Lacie has confidence and peace in His plans . Many days she encourages me and God knows, I have needed it as well.

I will begin a second treatment for the fight against breast cancer next week. Last Tuesday, while mentally preparing for Lacie’s parole hearing, I found out that the treatment had been lost by the shipping company, DHL. On Wednesday, before getting “the call” from Lacie, I received a call from the doctor’s office that it had been located. So many emotions in one day!!!

Consider what God has done: Who can straighten what he has made crooked? (Ecclesiastes 7:13)

When I read this scripture, it immediately made me think of the things God is doing for Lacie to straighten things out for her .

And God is doing so many things.

As some of you know, Lacie has been challenged with a lung condition for the last couple of years. In the next few days, she is going to be having surgery .

PLEASE be keeping her lifted up in prayer .

She is having the middle lobe of her lung removed due to an infection and mass that has been overlooked. This is why she has been c oughing up blood off and on since April 15, 2020 .

Additionally, she will be having three ribs that were previously injured replaced with titanium. They must be broken again in order to heal properly . Can you say, "OUCH??!!"

She will be at the hospital in Denver after surgery for approximately 9 days before returning to DWCF - Denver Women's Correctional Facility. Once she returns to DWCF, she will be recovering in the infirmary.

She will be alone the majority of the time and not surrounded by any of her "family" at DWCF or us - her friends and family out here!

Your prayers are powerful. Having surgery while being incarcerated does not sound ideal. No comforts of home, no phone calls to loved ones, no chicken soup, etc.

I could go on, however, the bottom line, she is ready, she has peace about this, she is tired of being sick, and she is managing all of this really well .

Her faith is strong and she is confident ! She can feel God's hand on her and is trusting that this will be a part of making the path straight . Thank you for your support for her.

In the process of pursuing a Federal Habeas case based on Lacie's rights being violated in the previous legal proceedings.
Has agreed to represent Lacie in her parole hearing - due to the surgery, her parole date has been changed to 4/28/21.
Moving forward with her clemency case and is working to create the "clemency video" for her parole hearing.
Working with ACLU Colorado to bring awareness of the medically challenged inmates that are not being considered for "Special Needs Parole". They will be highlighting Lacie's case in the next few months.

Special Needs Parole is considered for inmates that are dealing with serious health conditions. It is obvious that the CDOC - Colorado Department of Corrections - is not able to provide proper care for inmates. Lacie is a good example. The medical "care" she has not been given in the last year ended up making things worse for Lacie . Negligent to some degree. That is why she is now having to have a portion of her lung removed.

Her law firm has taken on a tremendous amount of legal representation that requires a strategy that I cannot even begin to fathom. Please pray that the Lord provides favor in all of the filings, hearings, and processes. All of this cannot be done without His wisdom and understanding. We need His plan and purpose for Lacie to be revealed each step of the way.

An Update on Lacie’s Case - January 12, 2021

Oh, the joy in this expression! Lacie had this taken last year. It is so good to "see" her personality shining through in spite of her many obstacles.

Please forgive the lengthy details.

We value your prayers!

Because Lacie’s case is so complicated and because she is coming up for parole, we are considering hiring her attorney to represent her in the parole hearing. This could be helpful from the perspective that she knows Lacie’s case best. We are going to need "Character Reference" letters to be written on her behalf.

Her current attorney was introduced to this case by a Denver University Law Professor almost two years ago. She has been working for Lacie pro bono. She created all the documents to begin the first step, a Federal Habeas case - because her rights have been violated - and that is in the works right now. A new judge took on the case this summer and it has been going back and forth with Gail, Lacie’s attorney, and the district attorney’s office. The District Attorney is responding to Gail’s most recent submission and it is supposed to be submitted by Friday, 1/15/21. It is such a long and drawn-out process.

While that is happening, Lacie’s parole is scheduled for March. Ken and I asked if it would help to have a parole attorney involved in the process. Colorado is known for not granting parole and requiring individuals to serve their entire sentence.

Additionally, there is the reality that Lacie has a serious health condition that would put her at serious risk if she were to be exposed to the virus and it has been circulating around the prison. They are currently on another lockdown until 1/19/2021. I can hear it in her voice when she calls that she is tired. She spends most of her days resting, which is what she needs right now. Due to the overlooked lung infection, she has been on at least 5 rounds of antibiotics since April 2020, not to mention the lengthy hospital stay she had in 2018. A CT Scan was completed on 12/30/2020. We are waiting on the results. The bottom line is, if you need medical care, prison is not the place you want to be.

So many things are happening all at once and somehow we believe it would be EXTREMELY beneficial to hire her attorney for her parole hearing. The challenge is it will require a retainer of $12,000. I have asked the attorney to give me one week to see if I can somehow get the funds together.

After the call with her attorney on Friday, I stayed in praise and prayer with the Lord in order to get direction on how to move forward.

Ironically, I was given a book at the end of last year that has turned out to be a total God-send! "The Handbook for Mitigation" by Victoria Rusk has brought some options to light. I reached out to the author today and she has already given me some great advice and things to consider.

I know God’s hand is over Lacie and we want to see her OUT of the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility so we can get her back to good health.

As I see it, she is a liability to the State of Colorado and I am hoping we can help them realize that and grant her a release, especially since she is innocent of the charges she has been falsely accused of doing. These false accusations are so extreme.

As it is with most things, it costs money. It is something we are expecting God to move on for us because as of right now, we do not have the $12,000 on hand to make this happen, however, I expect we will!

We are going to do our best to make it happen in the next week.

Your support and prayers are tremendous! I am in awe of the people I have never met that are interceding for Lacie and trusting God with her. It has been an incredible experience to witness and walk with Lacie.

For now, while all of this is being considered and collected, please continue to pray for wisdom and understanding on how to move forward AND for Lacie to have the strength and protection to stay well!!

PS I had surgery a few months ago, in November 2020. Surgery was postponed for two weeks due to my testing positive for Covid. It brought a whole new meaning to being tired. I had a lumpectomy (removal of the tumor) and removed a few lymph nodes on the right side. Unfortunately, they found cancer in one of them. This was disheartening, to say the least. After further tests and a meeting with the oncologist, I learned that chemotherapy was not recommended. That was an answer to prayer and I am thankful. I will continue to pursue alternative treatments as well. I realize that Lacie and I are in this together. She has not given up through all her own obstacles, and neither will I - through His grace and mercy.

I have been wanting to get an update out to all of you for the last couple of weeks. And then I had this great idea! It is an idea based on a friend’s mom receiving more than 100 cards for her 100th birthday.

Lacie's 40th Birthday is on September 15th.

Wouldn't it be amazing if she were to receive 40 Birthday Cards??!!

I am hoping that we can inundate her world with cards! Many of you love to send cards for special occasions! I know that because I have been the recipient of them! Who doesn't love to get a card with a handwritten note? If you are able to drop one in the mail, please do! She is allowed to receive cards and letters at the Denver Women's Correctional Facility, however, you cannot send her books, journals, or magazines through the mail. Those must be sent directly from a publisher or Amazon. There are some restrictions. I f you would like to send more than a card, give me a call and I will help coordinate that for you.

Communication with Lacie has been challenged by their mostly constant lockdown status since March. Most days they are only allowed one hour out of their rooms. It all sounds dreadful. When she is allowed to make calls, she is limited on time to get in touch with everyone. Calls are 20 minutes and just as we begin to get into a conversation and update each other, our calls come to an end. I have learned that this is just the way it is. When the 60-second and 30-second warnings are given, I have learned not to panic or rush and we try to get our goodbyes in before being automatically disconnected. It can be frustrating at times.

What is more frustrating is the reality that we will not be able to actually SEE her for her birthday! It is not surprising that in-person visits are not possible right now and like much of our world, we don't know when we will be allowed to see her again. Please keep your prayers lifted up for her.

She sounds well and lets me know that she has been feeling better. She does not have the strength and stamina she is accustomed to and is learning to rest. It is funny how we are going through similar experiences with our health. One thing I am impressed with is Lacie's constant ability to keep her attitude focused on learning! She recently requested a book on "homonyms" and has continued to work through the spelling books I was able to send her. She has a goal to be a better writer and communicator once she is released. Lacie is inspiring in so many ways!

In the meantime, her attorney continues to work on her case and just yesterday, sent in a new filing on her behalf. It is a waiting game for now. It is a time to pray for favor and for her clemency to be approved and processed. I am confident that there is a way!

Lacie and Stephanie - February 1994 - Taken during an unexpected opportunity to visit Lacie in Denver!

I do not hear from my little sister, Lacie, as often as I used to. She is not able to call as often as she did "BC"- Before COVID. They are limited in the amount of time they can spend outside of their rooms. I cannot imagine the stress of them being in a constant lockdown since May. Going outside in the fresh mountain air has not been an option either.

During our call tonight, she updated me on her medical status. She was able to FINALLY see an in-house medical provider. They have not had the ability to do so since the lockdowns began in May. The good news, the report stated that there is no sign of an abscess based on the most recent CAT Scan . The more challenging news, there are new growths on her thyroid glands. This is a new discovery. An appointment with the pulmonologist is scheduled and she will be going soon.

I sent an email to her attorney asking what could be done to allow her to be considered for a medical release. I am not sure how she is going to get out of prison, however, I am confident that she will.

Oh, how I long for that day!

I am doing my best to take care of myself and deal with my own medical challenges - another "BC" - Breast Cancer. My hope is that we can make some amazing memories together once she is released. And then, I am hopeful that she will be able to pursue some of the treatments I have been able to do!

I have completed two months of a cancer protocol that is based on the circulating tumor cells that have been found in my body. Additionally, I have completed 3 of the 6 antigen injections that were designed to attack and kill the tumor that was discovered in my body. We will know more about my status and where things stand with me at the end of August.

Please continue to keep us in your prayers and continue to praise God for the plans He has.

An Update From My Sister, Lacie! I want you to hear this! - July 7, 2020

Lacie and Stephanie - November 1992 - Lacie came to Houston from Denver so we could celebrate our first Thanksgiving together!

Today, 7/7/20, I received a call from my sister, Lacie! For the last week, she has been taking antibiotics and steroids (just like she did in April) because she has been coughing up blood. I have shared the news with you all, the faithful and believing men and women, trusting in God that He would heal her body! It has been a journey of faith! It has been challenging for those of us that love her and miss her and want to see her. To know she is suffering from an illness and does not have access to doctors that can treat her when she needs it is challenging.

But, oh she does have access to The Great Physician! The Mighty Hand of God that delivers – saves – heals – restores – and can be trusted! That is the mighty God we serve! Jehovah Rapha – The Lord God Our Healer!!!

We continue to trust in the Lord! We continue to praise Him even in the midst of our own despair. Why? Because He loves us and there are many moments in life where He made his healing evident . Personally, I have received numerous documented healings – today- there is another one in the making!

Lacie was able to be seen at the hospital where she had a CAT Scan of her lungs . Last year, there was a mass in her lungs the size of a grapefruit! Her well-being has been compromised and there have been some challenges she has dealt with in this last year. This year alone, she has had the flu, along with many other complications with symptoms that were quite scary to hear about, especially because I am not able to do anything about it.

In fact, we both have! It is amazing to me that the two of us have shared some parallel challenges with our health this year!

As I walk through each day trusting God for wisdom and healing, I also trust him to work in my sister AND I called on all of you to pray for us as well. THANK YOU!!! Your prayers and support have been welcomed and necessary!

So, when Lacie called today she shared how amazed she was by the entire “outing” to the hospital to have a CAT Scan. She was also concerned that she would have to be quarantined with other inmates that were not well and that was a big concern! Secondly, it usually takes all day to go and have tests done. She felt she needed to go yet she wasn’t looking forward to the “sit and wait”, especially if it meant she was going to be exposed to potential other unhealthy individuals and unsanitary conditions along the way.

Yet, she was willing!

Here is the good news! Here are the answers to our prayers. Ready?

She was taken to the hospital and had a CAT Scan and was back by 9:30 in the morning – that alone is a miracle!

The most hopeful news is the anticipation of the CAT Scan results! During the procedure, Lacie asked the technician if she saw anything. We know that the technicians conducting the scans are not allowed to talk about what they see, however, the technician responded in a way Lacie wasn’t expecting.

“I can see a hole where something was and there is nothing there.” The technician stated that she had never seen anything like it before!

Miraculous healing? All things are possible for those who believe. Nothing is impossible with God.

Additional praise – In April, the last time she took the prescribed antibiotics and steroids she had significant challenges. This time the side effects of the medications are not as bad and she is not having the same reactions! She said she can feel them doing their job!

Hallelujah!

Now for the test results and to hear what the radiologist has to say about it all!

Praising God for ALL His faithfulness and goodness!!!

Here is a little more of the story!!!

Had an amazing Bible study on Monday night, 7/6/2020. I was prayed for and then another amazing thing happened!!!

A member of the group, Mike, sounds the shofar before each meeting! It is to usher in the Glory of God and it is impressive!!!

That night, the Lord put it on his heart to sound the shofar directly at me while others laid hands on me and prayed.

It was such a powerful experience.

When we finished, I said, “I claim that for my sister too!”

That was Monday night.

Tuesday morning she had an appointment for the CAT Scan!!! We do not know when her appointments are or when she is going “out” for them, so it is even more amazing that God provided the right timing to be prayed over and sounded over with the shofar the night before.

Such an amazing testimony and so quickly after the gathering on Monday night!!

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

It has been over two weeks since my last email and I have been wanting to update you. I just have not had a chance to sit down and get it done!

Your prayers for Lacie have been tremendous! That first week after sending out the prayer request, so much was happening within the facility (DWCF - Denver Women's Correctional Facility) and it made me so grateful for your prayers! I could see that God was working things out for her. What I didn’t realize was His answers were not what we wanted to hear.

For now, the “Special Needs Parole” has been deferred. In all honesty, after getting some updates from her attorney, it sounds like the entire COVID-19 outbreak has completely overwhelmed the prison systems and how they “need” to handle things and “are” handling things.

So, as far as what to pray for regarding Lacie, here it goes!

1. Pray for her health to remain strong. That she is guarded and protected against anything that could bring her harm! Only God truly knows what could cause a challenge and we can trust Him. Pray for wisdom and direction for Lacie’s case. It has some challenges and it will require His direction to know how to move forward.

2. Pray for her two sons and their ability to put their trust in God and especially pray for their emotional well-being. Because visitation has been shut down, her youngest son, Roy (16 years old) who lives in Denver, has not been able to see his mom for months. Her oldest son, Damyn, who lives out of state, had plans to visit this past week. Those plans were canceled last month. Lacie has not seen her oldest son for over 11 years. He turned 21 last weekend.

3. Pray for her attorney, Gail. She has been working nonstop for weeks without a lot of rest. She is handling several clients, all with challenges and needs that are unique. Pray that she has the wisdom to know what to focus on and that she is able to use that wisdom in managing her time. We can be assured that God is the provider of all our needs! Time is valuable. Pray that she is able to manage her workload effectively! AND that she gets her rest and fun time too!

On a positive note, Lacie has enjoyed the quietness of this “season” and is spending more time reading, crocheting, writing, and studying. She has been focusing on becoming a better speller and is enjoying the spelling books she has been sent. She and a few other girls pray together every night on their knees and she said it has been amazing. Word has gotten out and some girls have come by to specifically ask for her to pray for them. The prayer group within her unit has begun to grow, which is good because all events, including church services, are canceled for now.

She is tired, I can hear that in her voice. She has HOPE, yet, I cannot imagine the challenges she faces on a daily basis. I don’t think any of us can. What we can identify with is that we are all in need of a Savior. I’m thankful she knows Him.

If you would like to make a financial contribution to assist with her basic needs, I can provide you with that link as well. She is very wise with the funds that family and friends send her. She has even been ordering more of her own food items from the commissary so she doesn’t have to spend as much time around the staff that comes in from the “outside” into the facility. This is not room service, folks! She actually purchases some of the “healthier” items for herself and has them in her room. Nutrition is important to her, especially now. Additionally, we will also be raising funds for her “Clemency” video. More about that in the next email.

PS The picture above is special to me for a few reasons. On April 15, 2020, I received word that there was a tumor in my right breast that was cause for concern. That day, when I got home from the doctor's office, I had a gift from Lacie in the mail. It was a pink bracelet with her favorite word on it. HOPE - surrounded with pink - little did I know, on April 23, 2020, the day before my 53rd birthday, I would receive word that the tumor was in fact Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. However, we had HOPE - Romans 5:5 (ESV) was going to be our reminder - "and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us." I also had a sister who cared about me and was trusting God with me. I knew we would not be walking this journey alone. We had the Holy Spirit and each other!

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST

Prayer Request for my sister, Lacie.

Many of you know a small part of my story and the events that have transpired in the last 10 months. After hearing details from numerous attorneys, including the Innocence Project, Ken and I began to understand how my sister was wrongfully imprisoned. False accusations were made against her and her husband during a high-conflict divorce and custody battle. They were going to be called as character witnesses. The tables turned on them when they offered to stand up and tell the truth and stories were created in an effort to discredit them.

It was in July 2019, I saw my little sister, Lacie, for the first time in 17 years. She has been incarcerated at the Denver Women’s Correctional Facility (DWCF) since April 1, 2009. Yes, it was April Fool’s Day when she was separated from her husband and two young sons who were 5 and 9 years old at the time.

In 2018, Lacie began suffering from an illness and was hospitalized multiple times over a couple of months. Ultimately, she was suffering from a lung condition and was coughing up blood, and they began monitoring a growth in her lungs.

While her medical condition has stabilized, the current threat of COVID-19, and what could happen if it began to show up in the prison population and around her has become more concerning.

At this time, the State of Colorado has begun to consider “Special Needs Parole” for inmates that would be negatively impacted by COVID-19 because of any existing “at-risk” medical condition .

Lacie’s attorney has submitted for a release on her behalf and that is why I am reaching out to you! I am asking that you please include her in your prayers.

First, I am asking that you pray for the health and safety of those who are incarcerated . Fighting an illness that has proven to be as contagious as Covid-19 could be disastrous, especially in a prison environment where social distancing, masks, and gloves are not currently available of being offered. This is especially concerning when Lacie is “at-risk” with pulmonary conditions. Lacie was advised last year to not be around anyone when they are ill. This Easter weekend, the first positive results were announced - a guard at the DWCF has been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Also, please pray that her “Special Needs Parole” be considered , that it be seen by the person that can move it forward , and that Lacie’s request has the favor of God connected to it .

Continue to intercede for her throughout the next couple of weeks. Pray the request her attorney filed be expedited with the results of Lacie being given the chance to live again on the "outside" , with her family and friends – and for now, at a distance of 6 ft. with no fences and no guards!

This would be such a tremendous blessing for Lacie, her children, her one-year-old grandchild, and the numerous friends and family that have watched how our justice system played a huge injustice to Lacie - with one exception – she has accomplished so much while wrongfully imprisoned; years of education, seminary, and earning her cosmetology license – just to name a few!

Once she is given the go-ahead and is released, she will go live with her sister-in-law in Denver. At that time, and I am hopeful it will be this month , she will need some additional provisions, clothes, shoes, and personal care items.

This is “Perfect Timing” for Lacie to be released , a time when things are not moving so quickly in our society. It would be a good time for her to acclimate to a new life of freedom.

If you would like me to provide Lacie with any personal correspondence – prayers, notes of encouragement, pictures, etc., you can send them to me via email or snail mail. I will get them to her.

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
